Improvisation Ensemble

Spring 2019

Taught By: Dave Douglas

Section: A

CRN: 4267

Credits: 2

By audition, at the instructor's discretion. Register to be considered. Open to all Mannes and New School Jazz students, including all instruments and voice. All participants will perform as instrumentalists in the ensemble and be guided to interpret a broad range of repertoire from the Douglas catalogue. The class will discuss all aspects of creating new music, including finding a personal language, rehearsal and performance practice, overcoming writer’s block and dealing with tradition and history. Led by award-winning trumpet player, composer, and College of the Performing Arts faculty member Dave Douglas, this performance class will involve all the elements of creative music performance: interpreting written music, ensemble playing and approaches to improvisation. The class will culminate in presentation of the music, including rehearsing and preparing for performances. Over the course of 10 weeks, Dave Douglas, along with select guest faculty, will lead the class through a series of coachings, lessons, and collaborative performance that will explore fundamentals of ensemble performance skills, including listening, rehearsing, group decision making, concert preparation, and more. Douglas will present scores and parts of his own works as part of the course. Students will perform on their instruments, collaborate with their fellow performers and faculty and develop invaluable skills in improvisation. The workshop will be guided as much as possible by the musical input of the participants. No prior improvisation skills are required. This course may be used to satisfy the 21st Century Proficiencies (Improvisation) requirement for Bachelors of Music students.
