Most music students graduate into a world where they will have to create a career that mixes different approaches to sharing the music they love. One of the most powerful ways of building performance experience, creating an audience and integrating your art within an existing community is to work with a public school. This course teaches students the practical skills of developing a program for that setting, presenting and discussing the program with children and building relationships with school personnel. It culminates in an evening benefit concert at a Brooklyn public elementary school. The class is comprised of four intensive three-hour class sessions. The first class takes place at Mannes and is an introduction to presenting music for children and discussing it in a way that makes the music more accessible. The following three classes will be held at the public elementary school in Brooklyn. Mannes students will make presentations in a variety of classrooms for the elementary school students where they will perform short pieces and talk about them to the students, observed by Ms. Dinnerstein and by the classroom teachers. Directly afterwards, we will gather to share feedback from Ms. Dinnerstein, the classroom teachers and from the Mannes classmates. Participants must submit three possible short pieces of music (5-7 minutes) to Ms. Dinnerstein by September 7th for her selection for the class presentations and concert. These pieces can if necessary include individual movements of a larger work. Ms. Dinnerstein will select two of these pieces to be used and will notify participants by September 15. These pieces must be performance-ready for the first class on October 10. All students must participate in the evening recital on November 8. Classes will take place on Wednesdays, October 10, 17, 24 and November 7 from 9-11:45 am. The evening recital will take place on Thursday, November 8 at 7 pm with a dress rehearsal at 5 pm."
