In the ebb tide of American power accelerated by the Trump presidency, Russia and China have rolled into the breach. From railroad construction to vaccine distribution to long-term leases of nuclear power plants, China and Russia are adopting policies that are reshaping polities and economies worldwide. What does this mean for the future of people across the globe? How will new forms of colonization by authoritarian states affect democracy, climate justice, economic change? Where are the riptides between the ambitions of China and Russia? Featuring appearances by specialists working on Eurasia, China, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America, this course examines the implications of Russia’s and China’s expanded reach for popular and state sovereignty and security, global public health, transportation and communications infrastructure, international debt, and much more. Seminar meetings will be held online. This course has been designed to be maximally inclusive of students who may have different degrees of physical access to campus. All required course elements will be available online. A number of sessions will offer opportunities for in-person engagement with a professor and other students.
