Crit Theory in Clin Pract

Fall 2022

Taught By: Daniel Gaztambide

Section: A

CRN: 14682

Credits: 3

This PhD-level course will introduce students to an interdisciplinary body of "critical theories"--including Critical Race Theory, Decolonial studies, Marxism, intersectional feminist and queer theories--and its engagement by psychoanalytic theorists and clinicians. Students will read classic papers in critical theory alongside the work of psychotherapists applying these theories in their clinical work, and to encourage deeper, theory-guided reflection on race, gender, sexuality, and class. The instructor will also present cases from his own clinical work to illustrate how critical theory can inform clinical intervention. The clinical dimension of this course will be complemented by reflection and discussions on the nature of identity in political context, and how psychological researchers and clinicians can work outside the lab and off the couch to promote social change. Alongside readings, small-group and in-class discussion, students will have the opportunity to present on a topic related to critical theory and psychology, including but not limited to clinical material. Note: Although this is a doctoral level course, it is open to MA students who fulfill one of the following requirements--a) have taken the Ethics course, or b) can provide a statement describing previous clinical work (i.e. as an LPC or LMSW).
