Tempest Tossed: Podcast Pract.

Spring 2019

Taught By: T. Alexander Aleinikoff

Section: A

CRN: 8009

Credits: 3

In this practicum, students will engage in planning, producing and promoting the Zolberg Institute’s podcast, Tempest Tossed:  Conversations on Migration and Mobility. The goal of the podcast is to provide in-depth discussions for a general public audience of current issues relating to immigration in the U.S. and abroad. (Topics in previous podcasts have included: the separation of children from their parents at the border, the Supreme Court’s decision in the “Muslim Ban” case, the new “public charge” rule that excludes immigrants from the U.S. likely to rely on public benefits, and common misconceptions about the integration of immigrants in the U.S.). Students will research and develop podcast episodes, learn about podcast production, and construct strategies for promotion of the podcast to a wider range of listeners.  In class, we will consider episode ideas, meet with experts who will advise on the production of the podcast, and discuss outreach initiatives. The practicum has the twin goals of preparing students to enter the podcast world as well as advancing Tempest Tossed so that it becomes a leading voice on migration and mobility. Open to: university graduate students; those outside of the major should seek permission from their program and the department of the course.
