Begins where Theory 1B left off. This course examines mode mixture, advanced chromatic harmony (augmented sixth chords, Neapolitan six chords, diminished seventh chords), melodic minor modes and chord/scale function, chromatic sequences, and advanced modulatory techniques. Continuing development of voice leading concepts, applying them in analytical settings. Continuing chord substitution, including Coltrane substitutions. Introducing so-called “nonfunctional” harmony; analysis of modern jazz tunes.
