Composers' Forum

Spring 2019

Taught By: Kirk Nurock

Section: A

CRN: 3034

Credits: 2

A composition seminar that prepares students for the kinds of colloquy often expected of a professional composer. Audiences, critics and historians, as well as others in our own field, often take our own words as entree to the music. The discussions broaden compositional awareness through each other's work and bring the perspective of one's peers. Each student is assigned one full class session to give an in-depth presentation of one of their own compositions. Presentations should include descriptions of form, content and ideology, lasting 45-60 minutes. Copies of a transposed score are made for the group. Ideally a recoring of a performance or rehearsal is supplied. There then follows group analyses with Q & A. Class members are encouraged to participate liberally, with imagination, insight and respect.

To have written at least one ensemble composition (ie not a solo work or lead sheet), plus Theory 2B or permission of the instructor.
