A one-semester overview of jazz development, beginning with its roots in African, European, and American music and continuing to the bands of New Orleans and other American and world influences. The work and stylistic contributions of the great jazz originals, from Buddy Bolden to John Coltrane and beyond, are examined in their cultural and musical context. This course counts toward the Ethnicities and Race minor.
