“Jazz and Gender” is a combined lecture/seminar course rooted in the exploration and discovery of the role that gender has played and continues to play in jazz as an art form. This course will have two lead faculty members as well as guest teaching artist/lecture faculty members who will aid in providing an atmosphere of discussion and learning around the landscape that has been created by those who have been marginalized in this music via an intersectional approach. It will highlight both the journey that individuals have taken and that they continue to embark upon as the genre evolves, as well as the ground that still needs to be covered in continuing to move forward toward gender equality and an inclusive musical landscape.
