Carnival Caravan Ensemble

Spring 2021

Section: A

CRN: 7125

Credits: 2

The Carnival Caravan Ensemble, exploring the vibrant intercultural connections of New Orleans and Brazil, is a journey of two distant musical cousins separated at birth. It is a tale of two cultures that were born into bondage and survived through a musical journey to freedom and self-expression. The traditional music of New Orleans and Brazil has been marginalized throughout history, both threatened by hardship, poverty, social injustice, and racism. However, common ground is readily found between these two cultures of storytellers and musicians. By documenting these musical journeys, this ensemble will reconnect these lost relatives in a modern day revival that explores the cultural exchange between North and South America. Students will learn to break down cultural boundaries by exploring hybridism in contemporary music and jazz through combining the music of New Orleans and Brazil. New Orleans and Brazil are most famous for throwing some of the greatest carnival celebrations where they get to show off their music and culture. This ensemble will embrace the spirit of carnival while we explore the roots of this music. Instrumentation: Class can accommodate up to 20 students. Brass instruments and vocalists heavily encouraged to join. Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, Alto Sax, Guitar/Steel Guitar, Electric/Acoustic Bass, Vocalists (can accommodate up to 4 singers), Drummers/Percussionists (can accommodate up to 3 drummers/percussionists), Piano/Keyboards, Accordion, Fiddle.
