Sound in Time

Spring 2019

Taught By: Diane Moser

Section: A

CRN: 3033

Credits: 2

This is a composition/performance ensemble designed to explore non-traditional ways of organizing sound, rhythm, harmony, notation, texture, timbre and musical form for improvisation and composition. Students will have weekly compositional/improvisational assignments based on these areas of focus: graphic scores, tonality/microtonality, extended techniques, soundpainting, environmental composition and electronic music. Through improvisation and performance, students will focus on differentiating between discrete and diffuse timbres, and on how attack/decay, rhythm/groove, tonality/microtonality, and dynamic envelopes affect timbre textures. Developing analytical listening skills is a core goal of this ensemble. There will be a performance of student compositions at the end of the semester.
