Sound in Time

Spring 2020

Taught By: Diane Moser

Section: A

CRN: 2753

Credits: 2

For Spring 2020 we will focus on ecology and the looming climate crisis we are currently experiencing. This a hybrid course, exploring the components of sound and the diverse parameters of timbre, rhythm, meter and extended techniques as an organizing musical principle, to create, combine, and transform sound in composition and performance. Our investigations focus on: the sounds in our environment, human and non-human, field recordings, acoustic ecology, Ecomusicology, electro-acoustic principles, graphic scores, symbolic notation, and conduction. Each student will create a personal lexicon that includes extended techniques, metaphors, and extra-musical inspiration and will create "tailor-made" improvisational scores for members of the class. There will be a final performance of these compositions at the end of the semester. This class is for the student who is interested in exploring new pathways of composing, performing and improvising. This class is open to Jazz, Mannes,Drama and Lang students.
