In Vocal Jazz Survey, we will explore the recordings of a wide array of vocal jazz artists, with a focus not only on the musical elements involved in this great variety of jazz styles, but the political and sociological influences as well. Vocal Jazz categories covered: Blues, Big Band, Swing, Broadway, Hollywood, Afro Cuban, Bossa Nova, Ballads, Singer/Pianists, Bebop, Contrafact, Scat, Vocalese, Modern, Protest and Singer/Songwriters. Each student will come away from this class with an expansive knowledge of the stylistic choices available to them, in order to help them build their own individual and unique repertoire, as well as gaining the professional skills to sing at jam sessions.
