Ethnographic Media Lab

Fall 2021

Taught By: Leila Lin

Section: A

CRN: 11837

Credits: 4

This course -- part seminar, part media-making lab -- explores nonfiction media production practices that embrace “ethnographic sensibilities” with regards to observation, participation, situated knowledge, and more. We examine how a wide range of ethnographic media--from film, photography, sound to animation and interactive media projects--makes up a fluid genre that experiments with performance, reflexivity, and narrative conventions. We reflect on how various practices bolster, undermine, ignore, or challenge our understandings of the relationship between representation and reality. Then, we experiment with ways to apply these sensibilities and insights to our own media-making practices through a series of guided exercises to produce mini audio-visual projects. For the final project, the students can either produce an independent media project or produce a reflexive essay based on the readings, screenings, and guided exercises. No prior experience with media production technologies is required.
