Anthropologies in Sound

Spring 2021

Taught By: Andrew Moon

Section: A

CRN: 8875

Credits: 4

Anthropology has developed a rich and sustained interest in sound primarily as a thing of audible human experience. What happens when the human listener's experience gives way to a more diverse conception of sound? How can this reformulate otherwise commonsense understandings of hearing and listening, voice, sense, sentiment, and the body? This course aims to rethink anthropology's engagement with sound. By building this inquiry, we will locate sound as an entry point to explore techniques of scientific observation, machine-listening, and non-human communication, technologies of access, enhancement, and surveillance, and work on vibration, sonification, field recording, and more. Seminars will cover literature and non-textual media from anthropologists, designers, philosophers, earth scientists, transmission artists, writers, crip theorists, and critics, and draw on dialogue with guest speakers. In doing so, we will ask: in what way can these techniques and engagements with sound inform our own critical and creative inquiries? We will discuss weekly readings and media in class and study domains of sound online and elsewhere (where possible) to inform semester-long text- and practice-based projects. Throughout, we will give close attention to how shifts in the materiality and technology of sound have transformed the critical concepts and methods used to understand the world.
