[Tracks C, S] James Baldwin wrote: “True rebels, after all, are as rare as true lovers." Movies are supposedly full of love and lovers, yet we rarely see what happiness actually looks like between two people. Nor do we spend any time reimagining love or offering alternatives to emotional suffering, despair, and separation. Instead, we focus on lack, dissolution, unfulfilled desires, estrangement, miscommunication---the initial courting phase, and the breakup--thus remaining in the same narrative, representational, and ideological bind. In this class, we will focus specifically on filmic instances where love is not only central, but mutual and real. We will study the ways in which radical lovers defy social conventions and narrative obstacles in order to stay together. What makes these lovers true lovers? What makes their relationships work? And, as Baldwin points out, what makes them rebels as a result? In what way is the decision and ability to stay together based not simply on love, but on a love ethic that is tied to a larger project of social justice, liberation, and self-actualization? This class moves across a range of disciplines in order to think about the politics of love---film studies, gender studies, psychoanalysis, philosophy, and literature. [Tracks C, S]
