This is a January 2021 intensive course. It will meet between January 4-15. See the exact meeting dates and times below. A combination viewing and production class in which we analyze the conventions of the detective genre -- dissecting character tropes and unraveling how mystery plots work. We will discuss different eras, from film noir to 1970s neo-noir to Twin Peaks. Class will involve both synchronous and asynchronous components, including close readings of screenplays, texts, and viewing of films. Students will also complete a creative project: either a short film (experimental, documentary, or fiction) or a short screenplay that in some way explores the detective genre. We will workshop these in class, which will meet three times a week for two hour classes. Trench coat optional. [Track S]
