[Tracks C, S] The loosely defined Nouvelle Vague—a rush of outsider talents into a French film industry regarded by young rabble-rousers as moribund, exclusionary and commanded by an out-of-touch old guard—blew a breach in French film culture comparable to what the youthquake breakthrough of rock n’ roll did for pop music. This course will discuss not that breakthrough, principally, but rather its aftermath. Included will be figures who arrived just too late for the “first wave” like Luc Moullet, Maurice Pialat, and Jean Eustache; post-colonial African filmmakers working in the French language like Med Hondo and Ousmane Sembène; independent operators like the filmmakers of the Zanzibar Group and Les Films Diagonale; the pioneering feminist films of the Brussels-born Chantal Akerman; writers-turned-filmmakers Marguerite Duras and Alain Robbe-Grillet; émigré filmmakers like Walerian Borowczyk and Andrzej Żuławski from Poland, the Georgian Otar Iosseliani, and the American William Klein; mainstream popular filmmakers like Jean-Pierre Mocky, Robert Enrico, and Philippe de Broca; and the rising generation of New Wave-inspired filmmakers who began making their first films in the 1980s, including Claire Denis, Leos Carax, André Téchiné, and Oliver Assayas.
