Introduction to Sound Studies
Fall 2024
Taught By: Julie Beth Napolin
Section: AX

CRN: 17314

Credits: 4

The last two decades has involved an interest in “sound” in almost every field of study, so much so “sound studies” has emerged as a field in its own right. In its interdisciplinarity, sound studies calls upon culture, media, film, music, art, performance, literature, science, technology, race, gender, sexuality, disability, and more. Sound, it seems, is everywhere. But what is it? This course introduces students to sound studies and is suitable to anyone seeking to expand their current area of study through an attention to the sonic. We will discuss sound in its global contexts, with a particular attention to the way there is no sound without culture and politics. [Tracks C, M]
