[Track S] Utilizing the legendary work of two contrasting screenwriters from the 1960s-70s, this course analyzes the groundbreaking cinematic writing techniques of Paddy Chayefsky and John Cassavetes – with an emphasis on their approaches to dialogue, crafting characters, and framing a narrative. We will break down Chayefsky’s precision and Cassavetes’ spontaneity from a screenwriter’s creative and logistical vantage point. There will be virtual screenings, seminar-style group discussions, readings, and presentational projects.
