[Tracks C, M, S] This course will involve a close reading of recent Nobel Laureate Peter Handke’s seminal novel The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick as well as a comparison of the film adaptation by Wim Wenders. Handke’s experimental novel ushers in a new kind of writing which, it can be argued, Wim Wenders then adapts into a new kind of cinema. The film is unusual in that it is an almost literal line-by-line adaptation of the book and, as such, presents a useful model for thinking about the art of cinematic adaptation.
