Kathy Acker (1947-97) was a novelist who also worked in other media. She has been hailed variously as a punk, postmodern, feminist, queer or genderqueer writer, although none of these labels quite fit. Here we will first put her work in the context of the downtown New York scene of the 80s, before moving through selections of her work in literature, cinema and music and on to her extensive influence on contemporary media arts.
