Trans Media

Transgender people are often presented as stereotypes in mainstream media. Our focus in this course is much more on how transgender people choose to make media for themselves. We will look at work in literature, video, audio and performance in which a diverse range of trans people (including gender non-conforming) try to find forms of expression for their lives. The trans community is small relatively powerless compared to the number of people who actively deny their right to exist. This creates special tensions between the project of a frank and open trans media and the constant need to defend trans lives.
