Consciousness & Crisis
Spring 2022
Taught By: Suneil Sanzgiri
Section: A
CRN: 11894
Credits: 4
The advent of cinema came at a time of radical change across the world, from the industrial revolution and evolutions in modern capitalism, to the success of the Bolsheviks in Russia. At each moment throughout the 20th & 21st centuries, film has adapted, and in fact help shape our understanding of each epochal shift in consciousness and global crisis from the invention of the clock to the 24-hour news cycle. The course will analyse how the moving image changes perceptions of time, urgency, immediacy, and collectivity. Students will be asked to produce moving-image work alongside readings, discussions, screenings, and writing.
