This course will examine the evolution of capitalism alongside the evolution of technologies that facilitate production, reproduction, extraction, and speculation. We will discuss and read about the history of accounting, the history of stock exchanges, actuarial techniques in insurance, communication technology, infrastructure, logistics, the role of information in the reorganization of supply chains, just-in-time manufacturing and lean production models, automation, social reproduction, surveillance capitalism, platform capitalism, and the emergence of complex financial instruments that enable securitization. Throughout the course we will pay particular attention to the dynamic relationship between changes in material conditions and changes in the organization of society. [Tracks C, M]
