Chantal Akerman
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: Culture and Media
CRN: 13621
Credits: 4
Chantal Akerman was always more than any one thing: more than a feminist filmmaker, or a lesbian filmmaker, or a Belgian filmmaker, or a Jewish filmmaker. Her works spanned genres, from experimental shorts and video installations to literary adaptations and the musical. Still, none of this adequately describes the singular force of Akerman and her always uncompromising vision. This course surveys the range of Akerman’s career, from her early sketches of life in New York City in the early 1970s, to her celebrated depiction of domestic tedium in Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), to her tender and unflinching portrait of her ailing mother in No Home Movie (2015), her last film. Students will read with and around each film, including texts by and about Akerman as well as those that pick up the social, political, and aesthetic issues raised in her always astonishing works. NOTE: This course is open to Juniors and Seniors majoring in Culture & Media and Screen Studies only. [Tracks C, S]
