Hip Hop Dance Practices Cont.

Spring 2019

Taught By: Ana Garcia

Section: A

CRN: 7295

Credits: 1

Designed for students with prior Hip Hop dance experience, this studio practice course deepens students’ understanding of classic styles such as Popping, Breaking, Locking, Uprocking, and Uptown-New Jack Swing. By studying street dance history, while also incorporating today's trends, students begin to craft their own unique personal flavor. An exploration of what it means to freestyle, deconstruct basics, and battle (compete) helps students to understand the “call and response” aspects of performance, while generating respect for fundamentals that pre-date the current urban/global Hip Hop phenomenon. The course includes in-class battles and performances, as well as DVD and internet assignments that will be discussed in class to help dispel media myths surrounding Hip Hop. Prerequisite: a previous semester of Hip Hop Dance Practices or by permission of instructor. Space is limited and priority is given to dance concentrators.
