Capitalism is uniquely defined by the significant role played by private enterprise. What role do workers, managers, owners, stockholders and communities play in this basic aspect of capitalist society? How do the operations of business impact each of these groups and either galvanize or undermine social change? In this 6 week course, students will investigate these questions through a series of weekly seminar discussions with guest experts. Through in-depth discussions with experts in topics such as corporate social responsibility, the role of management and labor unions, global business practices, and sustainable investing, students will examine the consequences of business activities on standards of living, inequality, technological change, government policy, media, political action and climate change. Students will be required to attend five or more sessions and respond with written commentary on lectures from both the instructor and outside speakers. The course is for a broad range of students interested in understanding society and working to improve it, whether from inside the business world or outside. Recommended for students interested in sustainable investing, starting their own business, or working in politics, law, or the arts in ways that connect to business. This course does not count towards the Economics major or minor.
