This course looks at precapitalist gift economies, Marx’s theory of capitalism, and derivative finance as different ways of dealing with exchange. It will focus on anthropological work on the gift and countergift, Marx’s theory of money and capital, and the evolution of portfolio theory to derivative finance and the associated models of agency and subjectivity .
