This course will focus on the world wide crumbling of the Anglo-American liberal order. We will begin in 1989— the end Communism-- the apparent highpoint of the liberal order, and trace its ongoing disintegration in such forms as financial crisis, resurgent nationalism and authoritarian leadership. We will seek the causes of this disintegration in imperial overreach and exploitation, as well as in psychological and cultural factors. A basic focus of the class will be on the question of possible successors to the liberal order.
