In this course we will explore fascism, communism, nationalism, and anti-colonialism in the twentieth century. Variously termed the age of extremes, the age of the masses, and the era of global politics, our focus will be on war and revolution. We will study the ambiguous and perhaps tenuous character of American hegemony—the outcome of the two world wars-- and the rise of Asia, especially China, India and Japan.
