In Museum of Capitalism: History Lab, Lang students will collaborate with the artist collective FICTILIS to design and curate The Museum of Capitalism at the New School, which will be installed in the Sheila Johnson Design Center in Fall 2019. In this free public museum, visitors will inhabit a speculative future perspective, allowing them to recognize the historical specificity, idiosyncrasy, and contingency of the present. This novel forum encourages collective imaginings of new, more equitable, and more sustainable economies for the future. In this co-taught seminar, students will encounter the history of capitalism and critical theories of capitalism through the process of hands-on exhibit design. Working within and beyond the New School’s own art and archival collections, as well as those already acquired by the Museum of Capitalism, students will select assets and create exhibits that materialize their historical and critical inquiries.
