Code + The Arts

Spring 2019

Taught By: Joseph Diebes

Section: A

CRN: 5530

Credits: 4

This course is both a practical introduction to creative coding (computer programming for artistic purposes) and a critical examination of such a practice within a contemporary cultural context. Each week we will spend one class learning to program using the Processing (Java) language with an emphasis on the manipulation of graphics, images, text, and sound. In the other weekly class we will critically consider how and why artists are using code in a wide range of mediums. These seminar discussions will be guided by key readings in media theory, art history, and philosophy in order to provoke questions around the politics of interactivity, glitch aesthetics, the poetics of data mining, and networked social practices.
