This course explores ideas of embodied presence in performance through an in-depth study of both historical threads and contemporary practice in dance, theater and performance art. We will look at performance structures that consider the real presence of the performer beyond created expressions of character in theater or movement strategies in dance and trends of embodied performance in the visual arts. Specific areas to be discussed include early 20th century ideas of physicality in theater and the birth and growth of German Expressionist dance through to post-war intersections of dance and theatre in Europe and America. Evolving theories of corporeality provide a lens to consider performance practice across disciplines, including Grotowski’s physical actor, American interdisciplinary performance, and emerging fields of body art. From this historical background, the course examines contemporary trends in Tanztheater (dance theatre) and Physical Theater, and the eroding boundaries between contemporary performance forms. Contemporary Performance practitioners studied include Pina Bausch, DV8, Meg Stuart, Sasha Walz, etc. in dance and Theater de Complicité, SITI Company, clowning and new approaches to Immersive Theater (Sleep No More, Then She Fell), etc. in theater.
