In this course, we will explore sites of contemporary art and culture at the intersection of disability and queerness; the politics of representation and embodiment; and current debates around the rhetorics of disability justice and LGBTQ+ Civil Rights. This course pays special attention to the roles that artistic activism play in countering hegemonic forms of governance. Substantial attention will be spent on alternatives to the western dominance of visuality as a primary modality in art and media cultures. Students will be encouraged to produce writings and creative projects as platforms to discuss technology, history, sex, gender, disability, illness, and social justice. Weekly case studies, field trips, and hands-on projects will include an overview of queer and disabled artists working with painting, sculpture, photography, performance, interactive media, and public art projects with/by/for LGBTQ+ and gender non-conforming communities, youth, and those living with disability, trauma, chronic and mental illness. During in class presentations we will explore notable works by Riva Lehrer, ACT-UP, Sunaura Taylor, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Gregg Bordowitz, William Pope.L, Cassils, Zoe Leonard, Ron Athey, AA Bronson, General Idea, Community Action Center, Park McArthur, Nayland Blake, Sins Invalid, and Gran Fury, among others, in addition to examining contributions from mainstream popular culture. The theoretical material of the class center on contemporary disabled and queer writers of color; an introduction to crip theory paired with seminal texts from disability studies—where critical queerness, race, and disability studies push back against standards of whiteness, heteronormativity, and able-bodiedness.
