Section: A

CRN: 11376

Credits: 4

This ARTS PLATFORM COURSE meets twice a week: DAY ONE will be a virtual, public-facing talk with artists, curators, activists, and scholars across the world about the making and unmaking of performance practices and artistic production under conditions of pandemics; DAY TWO, the class will meet for a closed seminar discussion. This course explores performance in the context of the radical reorganization of life under the current COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises such as the AIDS and 1918 influenza pandemics. We will consider how performing artists have responded to and been affected by these worldwide epidemics, the varied forms and functions of the work created during these times, and potential longer term changes that may result. We’ll explore the performance of absence, activism, care, community, confusion, escape, introspection, politics, protest and beauty, while also making space to consider the state of arts presenting institutions and infrastructure in the wake of COVID-19. The public-facing webinars and required readings will engage with disciplines of theater, dance, music, performance art, performance studies, public health, and politics. Students will work collaboratively towards a creative project that imagines or performs an alternative response to this age of pandemic. This course can also satisfy an elective requirement for the Contemporary Dance, Contemporary Music, Theater, or Visual Studies majors and minors.
