Walking the Edge: Citizen Art & Science on the New York City Shoreline
Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 14264
Credits: 4
New York City’s shorelines are a meeting place not only for land and water, but for artists, environmentalists, scientists, and urban planners. Students in this Civic Liberal Arts course will connect to that interdisciplinary community of people who are studying, shaping, and engaging the forces at play where the water meets the land. In partnership with Culture Push, an arts organization that nurtures artists engaging in civic participation and imaginative problem-solving, the class will learn from a range of artists, civic and scientific experts, visit a variety of the city's shorelines, and encounter artworks that engage environmental issues to impact action. Students will develop the knowledge and skills to become advocates and participants in the use of art to engage diverse communities in effectively addressing urgent practical challenges in the world around them, and will conceptualize, research and create their own artistic-environmental interactions.
