The Art of Protest

Fall 2021

Taught By: Sarah Richter

Section: A

CRN: 12423

Credits: 4

This course explores how protest has used performance (dance, choreography, theater, dramaturgy, music, sound) in order to articulate, collectivize, and demonstrate its radical stakes. Each module traces a paradigmatic tension within social movement strategy, understanding them as co-extensive with dialogues in art. Students will develop a comprehensive, historically informed view of protest culture and activist practice; learn to describe key elements in performance; and understand the complex role of art in political discourse, social and communal life, and civic conflict and disobedience.
