Tactility in the Arts

Spring 2023

Taught By: Ivan Raykoff

Section: AX

CRN: 13526

Credits: 4

This course explores the sense of touch across the arts, including the visual arts, music and immersive sound environments, dance and theatrical performances, and the “haptic visuality” of cinema. We will consider both old and new approaches to touch in the context of broader scientific and philosophical understandings of tactility as well as practical applications of communicative touch such as the Braille writing system, keyboards, and touch screens. The historical sweep of the course ranges from Aristotle’s hierarchy of the senses to Apollinaire’s and Marinetti’s innovative “arts of touch” in the early twentieth century to contemporary applications of tactile awareness. In addition to readings and research papers, the course includes practical “hands-on” work to define a set of research parameters that can be applied to creative problem-solving and artistic exploration.
