Trans women and trans feminine people have been vibrant participants in New York City’s art, performance, and activist scenes; and a founding tenet of the Performance Studies field is the significance of the site where performance takes place—including its metropolitan environment and those who populate it. This course serves to introduce students to trans women’s art, activist, and performance cultures in New York City, and to the ways in which this urban environment is lived in and staged by its trans feminine residents and visitors. This class will take the city itself as trans womanhood’s “text,” exploring trans women’s histories, the significant performance venues they performed in, and the public spaces where trans women gathered in collective spectacles and social relations of artistic practice, performance composition, sex work, and activist organizing and mutual aid. Readings and artworks will be accompanied by visits to trans women’s archives, video clips of trans women navigating the streets of the city, walking tours to specific sites where trans women lived, worked, revolted, and made art together, and attendance at present-day performances by trans woman and trans feminine people in the city.
