This class focuses on movement journalism, which is journalism that meets the needs of communities directly affected by injustice. It is also journalism that challenges the status quo of inequality, which legacy media, in its pretense of objectivity and its single narratives, often upholds in this country. During the course, we will read and discuss noted works by journalists, past and present, in the context of the history, power, and challenges of movement journalism, and we will discuss the continual questions in legacy media of objectivity, fairness, and balance. We will examine key skills of journalism excellence such as critical thinking, empathy, proportionality, and engaging ably with people in their communities. We will analyze and produce forms of accurate, evidence-based reporting and narrative storytelling. The class will also serve as the newsroom of The Know, a student--led digital news platform, for which students will report and produce news projects and news stories driven by the community. It is strongly emphasized that students should have successfully completed NND1 and NND2 before taking this course. This course satisfies the Reporting and Craft Elective requirement for the Journalism+Design major.
