This project-based course looks at how technology such as the talking drum, the telegraph, and TikTok have shaped the practice of journalism, what humans can do better than machines (and vice versa), and how journalism can sometimes turn people into machines. Students examine algorithms underlying journalistic forms and experiment with a variety of automation tools, particularly those employing large language models and other forms of machine learning. Students discuss the advantages, limitations, and ethical issues of these automated processes; look at how news organizations are already using AI to support newsgathering, production, and distribution; and think about ways in which journalists can position themselves to collaborate with automation effectively and humanely. No programming skills are required but expect to work with unfamiliar software applications. This course satisfies the Form Elective for Journalism and Design.
