Blake to Byron:Romantic Poetry

Spring 2020

Taught By: Elaine Savory

Section: A

CRN: 6369

Credits: 4

This course reads British poetry of the period 1770- 1835 in the context of actual revolutions (American, French, Haitian), major changes in culture and way of life (the so-called Industrial Revolution), the battle for the Abolition of Slavery and increasing demands for more political and social freedom for women. The course explores the interesting and often complex and surprising relation between poetic forms and socio-political and cultural contexts. This course requires no prior technical knowledge of poetry and is equally useful for those who write and those who read it.
