In this literary studies course, we will explore the ontology and topography of the imagination in both intimate spaces of dwelling and public urban spaces. In the process, we will consider the poetics of chance, of the everyday and of the flaneur. We will watch films by Agnes Varda and read novels, poetry and theory by writers such as Gaston Bachelard, James Baldwin, Walter Benjamin, Michel de Certeau, Harryette Mullen, Cole Swensen, and Virginia Woolf, among others. This course is an elective for literary studies writing majors but is open to students from all disciplines. Students will have the opportunity to complete both creative and critical assignments.
