How do interiors (rooms, surfaces, furniture, the decorative arts) influence our writing? How have different writers and artists portrayed indoor spaces, and what can these fabricated terrains induce in a plot, mood, psychological palette, or reveal about identity as it relates to class, race, and gender? From the moody labyrinths of fictional manors and estates, to the haunted house, to a writer’s desk in a cramped apartment, we will investigate interiors not only in their role as “setting” but as characters and subjects in themselves. In this hybrid course, we will write our own poems, short fictions, and hybrid texts—turning to writers, filmmakers, and artists such as Chantal Akerman, John Ashbery, Gaston Bachelard, James Baldwin, Walter Benjamin, Claire-Louise Bennett, Elizabeth Bishop, George Brecht, Amina Cain, Sophie Calle, Kate Durbin, Ross Gay, Renee Gladman, Shirley Jackson, Kamran Javadizadeh, Carmen Maria Machado, Xavier de Maistre, Harryette Mullen, Ariana Reines, Marilynne Robinson, Sei Shōnagon, Gertrude Stein, Andrei Tarkovsky, Mónica de la Torre, Edith Wharton, Virginia Woolf, and many others for inspiration and guidance. We will also study our own dwelling places and our unique ways of arranging them, both the rooms we live in and the spaces in our memories. Writers in this class will participate in online peer review, Zoom workshops, and respond to weekly guided prompts in multiple genres. Two major writing projects (in different genres) will be revised and completed in fulfillment of the midterm and final.
