Music for Political Action

Fall 2019

Taught By: Daniel Blake

Section: A

CRN: 7279

Credits: 4

This course looks at music as a powerful form of political action. Building upon the work of the New School’s Platform Cooperative Consortium, students will explore the emerging cooperative ownership movement as it has influenced the expression and dissemination of music throughout the world. Students will complete a mid-semester research project looking in detail at one example of cooperative music making, which will be presented at the annual Platform Co-op Conference at the New School to be held November 9-11, 2019. Each student will also complete a model composition based on the mid-term project that will be recorded and compiled as a digital album to be shared with the New School community. The class will cover a wide variety of genres, music making techniques, and is open to students at all levels of experience.
