Gender and Music Technologies

Spring 2021

Taught By: Clara Latham

Section: A

This course examines the relationship between gender, technology, and musical practice. We will consider music technologies from throughout history, questioning whether these technologies are just tools or if they hold ethical values that connect to other aspects of cultural identity, specifically gender, race, and sexuality. We will make connections between musical technologies and bodily technologies by reading some classic texts of feminist and queer discourse, as well as some current ways of thinking about writing about the ways gender, race, and sexuality interact with sound and music. We will use the ideas we encounter to analyze musical practices, questioning the ways in which gender, sexuality, race and other identities are shaped, expressed, and resisted in a wide range of music technologies, from player pianos to vocoders, radios to autotune. Course material spans classical and popular music studies as well as queer studies, black studies, Marxist feminism, and sound studies. Students will participate in seminar discussions, and listen to a wide variety of recordings; other requirements will include a research paper or creative project, a book report, and short written responses. Familiarity with Western music notation is not required for this course, although it will be useful. The course will be delivered both synchronously, with live online remote seminar sessions, and asynchronously, through discussion threads and prepared presentations.
