Mixing is one of the most important phases of contemporary audio production. A good mix is essential for all beat-based popular musics (where most of the audio elements are pre-recorded samples). Throughout the course, mixes done by contemporary mixing engineers such as Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry, One Republic), MixedbyAli (Drake, Kendrik Lamar), Manny Marroquin (Kanye West, Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys), Paul Epworth (Adele, Coldplay, Florence and the Machine), David Kahne (Lana del Rey, The Strokes), David Wrench (The xx, FKA Twigs), Tom Elmhirst (London Grammar, Lorde, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie) will be listened to and analyzed. In addition to audio analysis, the theory of mixing will be discussed through various articles. Basic elements of mixing like equalization, compression, reverberation, modulation, panning, saturation will be taught in class and students will be able to improve their mixing skills by working on their own songs and projects. Mastering is the final stage in audio production. The basic techniques, concepts, philosophy of mastering will be discussed. Students will be able to experiment with these mastering techniques, concepts and apply them on their final projects.
