(Re)Composing Opera

Fall 2019

Taught By: Stefania deKenessey

Section: AX

CRN: 7282

Credits: 4

In this seminar-plus course, we re-invent, re-imagine and re-write “opera”. We start with a simple definition of the form as storytelling with music, then ask fundamental questions such as: Whose stories do we tell? Who does the telling and who does the listening? Who gets to sing and who gets to play? In what style or genre? What is our social context? What are the cultural and political ramifications of our work? We explore these issues through both investigative research and creative activity. We team up with composer Kamala Sankaram, artistic director of the avant-garde company Experiments in Opera, and follow her journey to one or more premieres during the fall semester. Along the way, we discuss her goals and methods, textual as well as musical; we attend rehearsals, observe the process of revision and meet with members of her team. As a class, we also create our own one-act “opera” by collaboratively writing and performing a short dramatic story with music at the end of the semester. No prior experience with opera or musical theater is required, but previous work with writing or performing music, poetry and/or theater is strongly encouraged.
