This course will take as its point of departure Soren Kierkegaard's discussion of the relation between ancient and modern tragedy. We will explore Kierkegaard's theses in particular, and issues having to do with the relation between tragic poetry and philosophy in general, with detailed readings of Sophocles' Philoctetes, Shakespeare's Hamlet, and other works both ancient and modern.
