Intro to Political Theory

Fall 2021

Taught By: Sandipto Dasgupta

Section: A

CRN: 11959

Credits: 4

This course is an introduction to political theory, its main questions, central concepts, polemical intentions, and animating considerations. We will critically engage with a wide range of interrelated topics, such as the quest for justice; the meanings of liberty and equality; the organization of collective life; the forms of political existence; the foundations, exercise, and regulation of power; the problem of obligation and its limits; resistance and revolution; the rights of citizens; law and power; war and violence; and the dialectics of inclusion and exclusion. We will also discuss how the relationship between the political, the economic, the moral and the religious has been thought and theorized and explore the implications of different articulations. Rather than be comprehensive, this course seeks to capture what constitutes a distinctively theoretical approach to the study of politics and what it has to offer in relation to political action. We will pursue this goal by confronting some of the key writings and thinkers in the history of political theory, how they argued, against whom and what, and explore different practices and enactments of political thinking as interventions in concrete political struggles over domination and emancipation.
